Background
Military service
Part of the background behind how I work. The specifics of service are recorded below and are deliberately left unfilled until they are supplied first-hand.

Carried forward
What it left behind
Habits that turned out to transfer directly into technical work.

01
Checklists over memory
Procedures exist because people are unreliable under pressure and at the end of a long day. A written cutover plan is the same instinct applied to a migration.
-
02
Brief before, debrief after
Say what is going to happen, then afterwards say honestly what actually happened and what would change next time. Most organizations do the first half and skip the second.
-
03
Maintain before it fails
Scheduled maintenance is cheaper than unscheduled repair, in equipment and in infrastructure. It is also the difference between a quiet week and a bad one.
-
04
Own the outcome
Report the situation accurately including the parts that reflect badly on you, because the alternative costs someone else time they do not have.
