Usable power
A parallel twin delivers its torque where road riding actually happens. There is enough to be entertaining without needing to break the law to reach it.
Garage
A 649cc parallel twin with anti-lock brakes. Not the fastest thing on the road and not trying to be - it is the size of bike that rewards riding it properly, and it gets maintained the same way everything else here does.
The bike
The Ninja 650 sits in the range where a motorcycle is quick enough to be interesting and forgiving enough to be ridden often. The parallel twin makes its torque low and mid-range, which is where road riding actually happens, and the riding position is upright enough to stay comfortable past the first hour.
The ABS is the part I would not give up. Braking hard on an imperfect surface is exactly the situation where a rider's judgment runs out fastest, and it is the one piece of equipment that does something useful in that moment.
Everything below is either a manufacturer specification or a record of work actually done. Nothing here is aspirational.
Specifications
On these figures These are Kawasaki's published specifications for the 2016 EX650 model year, not measurements taken from this bike. Kawasaki did not publish power or torque figures for this model in the US market, so none are listed here. Check the owner's manual or service manual before relying on any of it for service work.
Why this one
01
A parallel twin delivers its torque where road riding actually happens. There is enough to be entertaining without needing to break the law to reach it.
02
Dual front discs with ABS at both ends. The one system on the bike that improves the outcome specifically when the rider has already got something wrong.
03
Upright enough for real distance, light enough to manage in traffic, and simple enough that routine maintenance is something you do rather than something you schedule.

Maintenance
Same principle as everything else on this site: if it is not written down, it did not happen.
